FG meeting with ASUP ends in deadlock.

The National Executive Council of the Academic
Staff Union of Polytechnics has resolved to continue
its nine months old strike pending the outcome of its
meeting with the Senate Committee on Education on
July 1.
The President of the union, Mr. Chibuzor Asumogha,
made the statement in an interview with the News
Agency of Nigeria at the end of ASUPs 77th
National Executive Council meeting in Lagos.
He said a meeting of the committee and some
education stakeholders scheduled for June 24 did not
hold because no government official honoured the
invitation.
“That meeting was supposed to be held, resolution
reached and agreement signed.
“It was against the backdrop that we fixed the NEC
meeting so that if we have the resolutions, we will
come here and suspend the strike. Incidentally, none
of the government official came for the meeting and
because of that, the meeting did not hold,” he said.
The official said the committee deferred the meeting
to July 1.
Asumogha said the union resolved to continue the
strike until the parties would be able to arrive at a
mutual understanding.
“This is the position of the NEC; we are meeting
again next Tuesday.
“We have been compromising since 2013. We have
continued to agree to suspend the strike but at each
point, government always breached the agreement,” he
said.
He appealed to the parents and students to continue to
be patient and support the union to achieve its goals.
Asumogha said, “The thing we are saying is that
government should be committed. When is it going to
offset the arrears of the salary scale CONTISS
15 it is owing since 2009?’’
ASUP embarked on an indefinite strike in October,
2013 to press home its demand for improvement in the
condition of service and infrastructure in government-
owned polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of
technology.

I'm not Weak says Mr President.

President Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his
determination to bring back the more than 200
Chibok school girls saying that his silence in the past
was to avoid compromising investigations on the
abductions.
In a 514 word opinion piece article published in
Friday’s edition of the Washington Post ,
President Jonathan regretted that his silence on the
issue has been misconstrued by critics as a sign of
weakness as he confessed that being a father, he is
touched by the feelings of the parents of the abducted
girls.
In the article titled “Nothing is more important
than bringing home Nigeria’s missing
girls” the president said that the terrorism in
Nigeria is not unique and that it was in that respect
that Nigeria this month, alongside, Benin, Cameroon,
Chad, Niger, Britain and the United States
established an External Intelligence Response Unit to
share security information on such threats in West
Africa.
He also stated that his silence on the administration’s
efforts to secure the release of the kidnapped Chibok
girls did not amount to inaction or weakness as being
perceived by partisan critics.
He added that he would in September propose to the
United Nations to establish an international force to
tackle the activities of such terrorists anywhere they
are found.
Below is the article written by President Goodluck
Jonathan:
“I have had to remain quiet about
the continuing efforts by Nigeria’s
military, police and investigators to
find the girls kidnapped in April
from the town of Chibok by the
terrorist group Boko Haram.
“I am deeply concerned, however,
that my silence as we work to
accomplish the task at hand is
being misused by partisan critics
to suggest inaction or even
weakness.
“My silence has been necessary to
avoid compromising the details of
our investigation. But let me state
this unequivocally: My government
and our security and intelligence
services have spared no
resources, have not stopped and
will not stop until the girls are
returned home and the thugs who
took them are brought to justice.
“On my orders, our forces have
aggressively sought these killers in
the forests of northern Borno state,
where they are based. They are
fully committed to defending the
integrity of their country.
“My heart aches for the missing
children and their families. I am a
parent myself, and I know how
awfully this must hurt. Nothing is
more important to me than finding
and rescuing our girls.
“Since 2010, thousands of people
have been killed, injured, abducted
or forced by Boko Haram, which
seeks to overwhelm the country
and impose its ideology on all
Nigerians. My government is
determined to make that
impossible. We will not succumb
to the will of terrorists.
“The abduction of our children
cannot be seen as an isolated
event. Terrorism knows no
borders. This month, Nigeria,
Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger,
Britain and the United States
established an External
Intelligence Response Unit to
share security information on such
threats in West Africa.
I propose that we build on this
step to establish an enduring,
worldwide commitment to
destroying terrorism and those
who finance or give safe haven to
the terrorists.
“In September, I will urge the U.N.
General Assembly to establish a
U.N.-coordinated system for
sharing intelligence and, if
necessary, special forces and law
enforcement to confront terrorism
wherever it occurs.
“In Nigeria, there are political,
religious and ethnic cleavages to
overcome if we are to defeat Boko
Haram. We need greater
understanding and outreach
between Muslims and Christians.
We also know that, as it seeks to
recruit the gullible, Boko Haram
exploits the economic disparities
that remain a problem in our
country.
We are addressing these
challenges through such steps as
bringing stakeholders together and
creating a safe schools initiative, a
victims’ support fund and a
presidential economic recovery
program for northeastern Nigeria.
We are also committed to ridding
our country of corruption and
safeguarding human and civil
rights and the rule of law.
“Something positive can come out
of the situation in Nigeria: most
important, the return of the Chibok
girls, but also new international
cooperation to deny havens to
terrorists and destroy their
organizations wherever they are —
whether in the forests of Nigeria,
on the streets of New York or
sanctuaries in Iraq or Pakistan.
Those who value humanity ,
civilization and the innocence of
children can do no less.”

82 Students bagged First Class and 127 Students bagged Third Class at Covenant University at 2013/2014 Convocation.

Eighty two students of the Covenant University, Ota,
Ogun, on Friday bagged first class degrees at its
2013/12014 convocation.
The Chancellor of the University, David Oyedepo,
disclosed this at the 9th convocation and the
conferment of honorary doctorate degrees and
presentation of prizes to deserving students and
eminent citizens.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 1,429
students comprising 1,334 undergraduates and 95 post
graduates received various degrees during the
convocation.
In addition to the 82 students that bagged first class
honours, 594 bagged second class upper division
honours, 531 bagged second class lower division
honours while 127 bagged third class honours.
Mr. Oyedepo said that the institution in its 12 years
of existence had maintained a culture of excellence in
education and this had produced significant results.
He said the institution had received recognitions
nationally and internationally.
He said that for two years running, first class
graduates of the institution emerged tops in the
Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for
Innovation and Development (PRESSID) in Nigeria
(2013 and 2014).
“Our graduates are recognised all over the world
while most of them have gained postgraduate
admissions to world-class universities where they
stamped their indelible footprints in the academia and
the world,” Mr. Oyedepo said.
He urged the Federal Government to partner with the
nation’s universities to provide solution to the security
challenges in the country.
He said that the only way the Nigerian universities
could be relevant in solving societal problems was to
continue to carry out researches that would resolve
political and cultural challenges.
Chance Ayo, the Vice Chancellor of the institution,
said that the university was committed to producing
quality graduates for accelerated national
development.

Carlos Queiroz likely to Coach Super Eagles

Carlos Queiroz is no more a stranger in Coaching on
a world stage, having stood by Alex Ferguson at
Manchester United for many seasons before going on
to become Portugese coach for couple of years.
The recent showing at the World Cup with his latest
team Iran, has attracted the football governing body
in Nigeria football federation, NFF, as they plan for
the future.
According to hints from Nigeria camp at the World
Cup, NFF big wigs were said to be very impressed
by the quality of Queiroz coaching credentials and
they had showed interest in the Portuguese coach.
Speaking the mind of the football house, was one of
the board member, Sulaiman Kwande revealed that
they were really impressed with the manner he had
structured a team that does not boast of any world
class player.
The man who is also a member of the House of
Representatives expressed disgust with the way the
Super Eagles have played at the World Cup so far,
declaring that despite the victory over Bosnia, he’s
not impressed with their performance.
“Yes, we beat Bosnia and we are the African
Champions, and they have lifted the hope of Nigerians
so high in the past two years and only for them to
come and put us under serious pressure. You could
see that there was something wrong with the team.
“ Our first two games were not like World Cup
games. I am not saying we must win but look at the
way Ghana played, they were down against a big side
like Germany and they came up. Look at Iran for
God sake, they took Argentina to the last minute, I
mean what does that say?
“You have to see your player s with that kind of
commitment. See the way your players were falling
down in their match against Bosnia. I did not
understand what was going on, I was sitting down and
I had to go to the bathroom about ten times. I mean
there must be some kind of seriousness and pride
playing for your country. I do not know what is wrong
with the players, but I think it‘s time they know that
a lot is on their shoulders.
“Nigeria is going through difficult times believe it or
not ,and I can tell you that this is the one time that
Nigerians are united because of football. At least let
them make this period good period for us. Kwande
said.

Female Suicide Bomber in Lagos.

Fresh reports indicate that the Wednesday car
explosion in Apapa, Lagos was a car bombing not a
gasoline tanker explosion as earlier claimed by Lagos
State officials.
It was also learnt that explosion was carried out by
by a female suicide bomber who aimed at igniting
several gasoline depots in the area.
The explosion occurred on Creek Road near the
Burma Road junction.
A security source revealed to Sahara Reporters that
the explosion could have triggered a massive inferno
and inflicted a horrifying scale of casualties as well
as damage to properties in the Apapa area, which is
both a residential area as well as the hub of economic
activities, including shipping, manufacturing, and
storage of petrochemical products.
Our source said the suicide
bomber apparently sought to ignite
a series of gas distribution plants
and gasoline depots owned by
Folawiyo Energy some 150 meters
away from the site of the
explosion.
Some four persons were killed by
the explosion, among them the
female suicide bomber who drove
a Mercedes Benz car that caused
the explosion.Eyewitnesses said
the head of the female driver lay
on the ground next to the
Mercedes Benz used in the
bombing.
The Public Relations Officer of the
Lagos State Emergency
Management Agency (LASEMA),
Mr. Kehinde Adebayo, had told
reporters that the explosion was
from a gasoline tanker. On their
part, officials of the National
Emergency Management Agency
(NEMA) told SaharaReporters that
there was a major fire outbreak on
Commercial Road in Apapa on
Tuesday morning. One official said
the fire raged between 4 a.m. and
8 a.m. before it was contained by
firefighters, adding that one federal
firefighter was injured as he fought
the fire.
The Federal emergency officials
said they were denied entry to the
scene of the car bomb and were
excluded by Lagos officials from
participating in the rescue and
recovery process, in an apparent
move to hush up the news of the
bombing.
Even though LASEMA claimed that
the explosion was a gas cylinder
explosion at a facility owned by
Folawiyo Energy Limited (FEL), the
management of the company
issued a statement dissociating
itself from the claim. A statement
signed by the company’s media
consultant, Muyiwa Adekeye, said
the explosion did not happen on its
premises.
An account by Vanguard
newspaper that first pointed to
evidence of a car bombing
suggested that Boko Haram
militants might have targeted the
farm tank with highly inflammable
material packed in a Mercedes
Benz car in order to avoid
detection and cause grave
damage.
Although the car exploded beside
a loaded gasoline tanker, the
tanker did not catch fire.
The apparent car bomb will be the
first in Lagos since the Boko
Haram insurgency entered its
most violent stage in 2009.

Insurgents FLEE Sambisa Forest

Two members of the Islamic militants arrested on
Wednesday at Miri ward, behind University of
Maiduguri, by members of the vigilance group, Civilian
Joint Task Force (JTF), confessed that most of
them are fleeing the Sambisa forest, owing to a new
development in the forest, which they believe is a
spiritual attack.
According to Kolo Mustapha, one of the suspected
members of the sect, snakes are now attacking them
in the Sambisa forest.
“Most of us are fleeing because there are
too many snakes in the forest now. Once
they bite, they disappear and the victims
do not last for 24 hours. We were told that
the people of Chibok Local Government
Area are the ones turning into snake and
attacking us in the forest,” he said.
According to reports, the
suspect revealed further that some of their leaders
had escaped to Cameroon, because “they are known to
the Nigerian authorities and can be easily identified.”
According to him, some of them who had lived in
Maiduguri all their lives had nowhere to go, other than
to return and sneak into town.
“We came in last night and were trying to
hide in some uncompleted buildings when
some members of the Civilian JTF saw us.
After we were arrested, some of the group
members were able to identify us.
“We are pleading with them to spare our
lives. We were forced to join the sect, but
we know that it is not the right way. I have
never killed anyone, but my friend here has
killed many people,” he said.
Umar Abor, the other suspect, said Mustapha was
saying half truth, adding that they all participated in
all heinous acts of the sect in the past.
“We have fought together since 2010. We
fought in Marte, Bama, Buni Yadima and
Gwoza. We were not in Chibok, we have
not seen the girls, but we heard about it.
Our leaders have been talking about it and
we have been following news from the
radio.
“We decided to flee when almost all our
comrades were leaving the Sambisa
because of constant attacks by snakes,
which we were told was as a result of
abducted Chibok girls.
“They (our leaders) told us that it was the
people of Chibok that are hunting us
through diabolical means in the form of
snakes. We were in the forest in 2010 and
2011 and we left and came back last
year.”
They promised that if they were spared, they would
help the community in fishing out some of their
leaders and would lead authorities to places some
other sect members had fled to for safety.
Ali Musa, leader of the Civilian JTF at Bama Road
said many of the sect members had been fleeing the
Sambisa forest since the last two weeks, adding that
those arrested were being handed over to authorities,
except some of them who proved stubborn and were
killed.
